Prolotherapy scam

Common Prolotherapy Side-Effects and Other Related Information

Prolotherapy is the process of injecting natural fluids into cartilage, tendon, bone joint, or ligament that has been deteriorated due to aging, injury, or ailment. The therapy provides nourishment and lubrication to the affected area, and is usually considered as a safe option. It is a non-surgical procedure that has gained a tremendous level of acceptance during the present times.

However, even though somewhat unlikely and rare, prolotherapy can cause side-effects.

Common side-effects

One of the most common side-effects experienced by those who undergo prolotherapy is pain in the affected region, owing to injection. Other than that, the affected area may become bruised, or show signs of bleeding. In certain cases, the therapy may cause join effusion, swelling, and stiffness, as well. In addition to that, lung puncture, nerve injury, tendon or ligament injury, and spinal headache may occur. Among all the side-effects that may be triggered by the procedure, skin infection is considered as the most serious. But, the chance of an infection happening is about 1 in 10,000!

Minimizing problems

The thing with prolotherapy is that the therapist truly matters. To minimize the chance of any side-effect occurring, the best bet is to choose a practitioner who has a lot of experience with the procedure. Other than that, patients must watch what they eat during the procedure as certain foods may hamper the healing process. Relying on caffeine is not recommended. The same can be said about consuming alcohol. Apart from that, the use of any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug should be prevented, too.

The other side

While prolotherapy does pose certain risks, living with chronic pain can be even worse. For instance, those who suffer from chronic pain often find it impossible to run, or take long walks. Also, in many cases, the ability of a person to work is hampered significantly by the presence of such pain. A large number of patients who suffer from chronic pain report that they find it nearly impossible to sleep at night, or to enjoy life in general. As a matter of fact, even marriage may collapse owing to the presence of chronic pain. So, compared to the benefits that the therapy ensures, its risks seem quite insignificant.

Prolotherapy, although a safe treatment option for the most part, can lead to various side-effects. The good news, however, is that most side-effects caused by the therapy last for only a short duration of time.
